Whale cotton fabrics are often beautiful, but Northcott has taken it a step further and created this stunning ocean scene. Designed by Deborah Edwards & Melanie Samra featuring whale prints from Jody Bergsma, “Whale Song” has combined realistic whales with a bubble-blowing pattern giving a really playful yet visually stunning underwater effect.
This pattern makes the whales appear to be swimming through deep oceanic waters, where the water is alive with the dance of light and shadow through moving currents. Colours range from light icy blues to deep navy with hints of indigo creeping in.
The whales themselves have been created with a high level of detail, showing the distinctive black and white orca markings. Also known as killer whales, they are one of the ocean’s most intelligent and social creatures. In this pattern, they are shown in a large group, known as a pod, gliding busily through the ocean together, mirroring their natural behaviours. Maybe foraging for their next meal or just enjoying riding the waves.
This pattern reflects the orcas’ powerful presence in the ocean. Their grace, and their unity as they move together through the deep blue give this cotton fabric a feeling of strength and community.
At approximately 110cm (43 inches) wide, “Whale Song” is available by the metre (39 ⅓ inches) or half a metre (19 ½ inches). If you need a smaller amount, then we also have it available as a fat quarter, measuring approximately 55cm x 50cm (21 ½ x 19 ½ inches).
The premium quality and soft feel to this cotton make it suitable for a wide range of sewing projects. We think it would be particularly fun to make oceanic office cushions, a whale wall hanging or even a serene sea sewing machine cover.
So, if your next sewing project needs some ocean serenity then we hope that this whale cotton fabric will help bring on your creativity in waves!
