Description

The open-toe free-motion darning foot is designed for use with Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machines in categories  5, 6 & 7. Not for Emerald 122, 118, 116, Eden Rose 250M, Tribute 140M.

Free motion offers flexibility with sewing, helping you to sew in any direction. This makes it a great choice for quilting or embroidery as the small metal opening gives plenty of visibility to “draw” or quilt with the foot as you need. The open-toe front is perfect for easy stippling too.

This presser foot has a spring to help control the movement of the foot. This spring action helps to reduce thread breakages by reducing the amount of unnecessary fabric movement as you stitch.

To attach the foot, you will need to unscrew the adaptor that your snap-on foot attaches to (this is also known as an ankle). Place the foot against the presser bar to line up the holes with the screw holes, and then you can screw it in place.

To be able to move your fabric in any direction, you will need to cover/lower/disengage your feed dogs – this is the part of the sewing machine which usually moves the fabric underneath your presser foot. Without these working, you can fully control the direction and speed of the fabric, so you can stitch exactly as you want.

If your sewing machine has a free motion special stitch like “Free Motion Spring Action” or “Sensor Q foot” then select that. If you do not have one, then a straight stitch will work as well. Because your feed dogs aren’t helping you, your stitch length is now determined by how quickly you move your fabric versus how much you are pressing your pedal to move the needle. We suggest that you start out slow and steady. You’ll likely want to practice on some scraps that are similar to what you would like to use for the project to practice with. It helps to keep your arms and shoulders relaxed too. The more relaxed you are, the more smooth your movements will be.

Lower your presser foot before starting. In most cases, it is best to start off with your thread ends out of the way. To do this, lower your threaded needle manually and lift it back up once forming one stitch. Whilst holding each side of the thread that is now sticking out of the top of the fabric, softly pull upwards to lift the bobbin thread up and through your fabric. Both thread tails can now be moved safely out of the way as you begin your stitching. By keeping them out of the way, you can’t get the bobbin thread end caught and end up with it turning into a mess of thread underneath.

To achieve even stitches, sew on the spot a couple of times to anchor your starting position before moving off at a slow and steady pace. It may be helpful to stabise the fabric if you feel distorting or puckering. This can be especially problematic if you are using a delicate material, stitching with lots of twists and turns, or precise detailing in smaller areas. You can add more stability with the use of hoops, stabilisers, or adding starch to your fabric.

You might also want to consider how to transfer your design ideas onto your fabric so that you can easily follow your design. A few ideas that work very well for intricate patterns are to print or copy your design onto a dissolvable stabiliser that you can place on top of your fabric, or use carbon dressmaking pattern transfer paper.
