This 9mm open toe applique foot has been designed for use with Pfaff Sewing Machines in categories F, G, J, KL.

Open toe sewing machine feet provide a wide area between the inner edges of the feet. This gives a much greater visibility for sewing more precisely For example, when you are following around the edges of an applique.

Along with the easy viewing, this foot also has a wide groove centrally on the underside which keeps the centre of the foot off of your stitching. This is perfect for sewing professional-looking satin stitch finishes and reducing the chances of lifting the edge of an applique as you move over it if you are using a wider stitch width for a more rustic raw edge applique finish.

To use this presser foot to sew appliques, simply unclip your current foot from your Pfaff sewing machine then snap this foot on in its place. This foot is compatible with IDT if this is present on your machine.

It helps if you prepare your fabric pieces in advance for applique work – you may want to prewash your material, stiffen your pieces with starch or interfacing, or reduce movement in your base fabric with stabiliser or using a hoop. You can leave your applique edges raw or press them underneath. You may also want to secure your pieces in place with pins, basting, temporary glue or fusible web.

Place your applique under your presser foot and select the stitch width, length and type that you want. The most commonly used applique stitches are straight stitches, zigzag stitches, satin stitches, and blanket stitches but you might want to experiment with decorative stitches for a fun look.

Guide the edge of your applique along the inner edge on the right side of the foot. This technique ensures even seams and hides the straight stitch in the shadow of the seam, giving your applique a more hand-sewn look.

When sewing around curves or corners, we recommend using the pivot technique. Stop sewing with the needle down in the fabric when you need to change direction, lift the presser foot, and pivot the fabric to change direction. This helps to keep your pieces flat and in the correct position against the base fabric as well as improving the shape of your sharp twists and turns or corners in your applique design.

You might find that some raw edge appliques are easier to sew with excess fabric left on to begin with then trimmed down with applique scissors once it is stitched in place. A common way of using this technique is to sew a straight stitch first, trim the edges then follow over with a satin stitch afterwards for a really neat and professional finish.

The 9mm wide zigzag space means that this foot is also fantastic for sewing extra wide decorative stitches. The extra visibility can also come in handy for intricate quilting designs and piecing if you need to ensure your pattern-matching or positioning is joined in perfection.

If you are new to using an open-toe foot, then like any other new foot or technique, we recommend having a go on some scrap fabric that is similar to your project material. This will help you become familiar with the foot’s movement and let you make sure you have the best stitch selected for the job before starting on your actual project.
